WOOD MONOLITH

a short study in ergonomic design

Project Intent

To create an object that is fun and comfortable to hold, while also remaining aesthetically pleasing and interesting.

Shaping

I molded clay into a shape that was pleasing to hold in multiple positions.

Cutting

I sliced the clay in 1/4" thick layers and traced their shapes onto 1/4" thick wood. I cut out each shape with a band saw.

Gluing and Shaping

I glued each layer together in sequence. I shaped the final form with a die grinder and sand paper.

Final Monolithic Figure

I polished the final with linseed oil to bring out the grain and color.
