COMPUTER TABLE

a standing desk built from laminated wood.

Project Intent

My goal for this project is to create a table specifically for my computer and school supplies. My room is a mess, and it is the place I do everything from sleeping to eating to school work. I am constantly shifting books and boxes around to make space for my computer to do work, so I decided to solve that issue.

Inspiration

I found different forms of furniture, architecture, and characters that interested me. I was drawn towards a table with multiple "floating" tops as wells as long thin legs.

Ideation

I sketched ideas for tables, narrowing them down to more realistic possibilities as I went.

Basswood Scale Models

I built 1/8 scale basswood models to visualize a few of my concepts in three dimensions. I continued to refine my design until I got each proportion as I wanted it, allowing me to move into a full scale model with a clear picture of how I wanted my table to look.

Orthographic

I sketched out a full scale model with dimensions. I measured the length and width of my laptop in order to fit it on the desk. I also measured myself in order to find a comfortable height for working.

Full Scale Prototype

Using 2 in x 4 in pine boards, I built a full scale model to test the ergonomics of my table, as well as understand which joints I would use.

Final Construction

I built my final model from two different types of wood, in order to emphasize the height and width of the table. I used poplar for the tabletops and cherry for the legs. This allows the tabletops to stand out separately from the legs, highlighting their "floating" nature.

Final Model

This is my final model. It has all the components in place, and is joined only through lamination.
